We've focused on building a great culture at Dovetail, with super talented and nice people. This role is about leading multiple product and venture studio teams, collaborating with other Dovetail engineering leaders to continually improve our culture and business as we scale.

We're looking for someone who can bring experience from a similar role leading multiple teams and engineers— but who will also embrace and respect our culture, values, and way of working.

You will:

  • Work closely with several teams (product and venture) leveraging your experience to help them follow healthy process and build great software
  • Managing engineering leads and individual contributors within these teams, supporting them to progress their careers while at Dovetail
  • Help with hiring and retaining our engineering team
  • Collaborate with our other engineering managers to help scale our organisation
  • Uphold and promote continuous improvement, ensuring we align our technology organisation with our values and business objectives

Dovetail run a number of different projects, with teams operating independently, often using slightly different tech stacks, building products to achieve different goals. Our challenge is making all these separate teams feel like part of one greater team.

You'll report to the Head of Engineering and will manage other engineers and managers across Dovetail.

A strong technical background is a prerequisite for this role, but the majority of your time will be spent leading, growing, and supporting people — rather than writing code.

We're a distributed team, split across Australia and New Zealand. We have nice offices in Hyde Park, Sydney, and Auckland CBD. But flexibility has always been a part of Dovetail, so many of our staff work one or two days a week from home.

The people on your team may not be co-located with you — because of this we value people who are self-motivated and comfortable working in an asynchronous and distributed team.

We value learning and growth. Part of that is the Dovetail library: expense any book and share it with the team when you're done. We take time to do things the right way and encourage sharing you to bring your personality and interests to work.


Dovetail Ventures is an arm of the business where we found, invest in, or grow businesses. Working at Dovetail gives you ownership in current and future ventures. Several of our ventures have taken rounds of external funding and are in growth mode. So there's some real value there already.

Since we're split across two countries, we like to get together face to face at least once a year as a company for a team retreat. For our last retreat we went to Queenstown, New Zealand. Previous years we've gone to Indonesia and Costa Rica. We're still figuring out what to do with the whole "global pandemic" thing and retreats, but we'll sort something...
